Are your beliefs and opinions about yourself stopping your weight loss journey? It turns out that what you think about yourself has a massive impact on your weight loss success.

Thoughts affect your reality.

This has become an extremely popular saying and is probably not the first time that you have heard it. However, we’re going to remove any religious/spiritual woo from this saying and show you that it is actually something that can be based in psychology.

What you think about yourself and your life affect everything that you say and do. Thus, it affects how people treat you, what you do on a daily basis, and how you treat your body. There, all woo is now gone and this saying is brought back down to earth. Your thoughts affect every area of your life – especially when it comes to your weight.

Your thoughts are shaped by your beliefs about life.

According to this NLP article, some people’s behaviors seem impossible to change because in order change their behaviors, they must first change their beliefs. Not everyone knows this. In fact, most people spend their entire lives believing that change is impossible.

How is this related to weight loss?

If you have negative beliefs about your body or your ability to lose weight and keep it off, then you will not be able to make the changes necessary to achieve your goals.

For instance, if you look at your body and all you see is fat and think This is just who I am and I have never been/will never be anything different, it is unlikely that you will be able to stick to a healthy exercise and diet plan. You will be far more likely to self-sabotage and end up turning back to old habits that keep you fat.

On the other hand, if you can change your belief to This is an ending chapter in my story. In the next chapter I am thin, healthy, and happy, your beliefs about yourself shift into something positive.

Another example, would be the thought I am unworthy of love because I’m ugly. The belief that you are not worthy of love because of your appearance makes it a lot easier to give up on taking care of your body.

However, when you can change that belief to I am beautiful, flaws and all, you accept yourself and can begin to show real love to yourself. When you love yourself, eating healthier and exercising become a lot easier to decide to do.

This has been backed by science.

A study published by Health Psychology stated “that perceptions about health behaviors may play an important role in shaping health outcomes.” While changing negative perceptions and beliefs about your health may seem difficult, it is extremely possible and necessary if you want to lose weight and keep it off forever.
